Cancer

During Treatment

Nutrition plays a major role in many aspects of cancer treatment. During treatment, maintaining appropriate nutrition and managing symptoms such as lack of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and mucositis, is essential for a successful outcome. Nutrition therapy can be used during and after cancer therapy to maintain body weight and lean body mass, fight infection, and improve wellbeing. Patients who are well nourished may have a better prognosis and quality of life.

Cancer Survivorship

After treatment, adopting healthy diet and lifestyle changes are very important in survivorship. Research shows that the best formula for preventing reoccurrence of cancer is proper nutrition combined with weight control and exercise. Many studies have shown that people who eat diets rich in fruits and vegetables and sparse in meat and animal fat have lower rates of some cancers, including lung, breast, colon and stomach cancers. An anti-inflammatory diet high in antioxidants such as beta-carotene, lycopene, and vitamins A, C, and E has been shown to thwart the development of cancerous tumors.
