WEIGHT-LOSS MEDICATIONS

At Metanu Center, the focus of our weight loss program are diet, exercise and lifestyle changes. our weight loss interventions may involve medication if found appropriate by our physician nutrition specialist. Weight-loss drugs can be a useful tool to help you make the necessary diet and lifestyle changes. Medication may be considered for you if you haven't been able to lose weight through diet and exercise and you meet one of the following criteria:

 

  • Body mass index (BMI) is greater than 30

  • BMI is greater than 27 and a serious medical problem related to obesity, such as diabetes or high blood pressure

 

Before selecting a medication for you, Dr. Flynn will consider your health history, the possible side effects of the medications, any potential interaction of weight-loss drugs with other medications you're taking, and evaluate the potential benefits against the possible risks of taking the medication.

CONTRAVE

(naltrexone and bupropion)

  • Contrave is a combination of naltrexone, which is commonly used to treat alcohol and opioid dependence, and bupropion, an antidepressant that often reduces the risk of weight gain in people who are trying to quit smoking. 

  • Contrave decreases appetite and increases feeling of fullness

  • Potential side effects include nausea, constipation, headache, vomiting, dizziness

When combined with diet, regular exercise and lifestyle changes, weight-loss medications can help you achieve a weight loss up to of 5-10% of total body weight within a year, which can help improve your health by:

 

  • Decreasing blood pressure

  • Decreasing lipid levels

  • Decreasing blood glucose levels

  • Increasing insulin sensitivity
